The SOUL Traits are seven powerful singularities of Chromatic Magic tied to different emotions felt by any living organism, developed within a person's SOUL. Only beings composed of physical matter and flesh can directly manifest a Trait, such as humans and monsters who have consumed food made by humanity. The only method for someone to naturally obtain their Trait is by having an experience in their lives that required them to have a certain behavior.

History

The SOUL Traits were born from Irral, a Determination user. Irral (possibly being the first human to have a soul trait) shared his traits with many different people. These traits have been shown to stem from Irral's SOUL. This included the birth of the monster kind as a “sibling” species. Overtime, people would start to gain traits through certain behaviors.

Physical Appearance

The Soul of a human usually inflicts its magic on-to the human using it, giving the human a slight change. Depending on the Soul trait of a human, the human’s eye color will usually be the same color as their Soul, and in some instances, hair as well. When having a Dual-Traited Soul, the human will have a mix of colors in different ways; For example, Rave Rutrow has two traits of Justice and Perseverance, giving him yellow hair with purple streaks at the end and the same pattern for his eyes, and Amber Lightvale who has two traits of Integrity and Kindness, giving her blue hair and green eyes.

When a human dies, they will slowly lose their traits, such as Amber Lightvale, for when she died, her blue hair was slowly fading away as her actual, genetic hair color was appearing.

Primary Traits

Determination

The rarest trait out of the 7 traits. Along with human history, it has been proven that only one of this kind can be found in each generation.

It is unclear if there's a specific gap of time for a Determination soul to "spawn". It is potent, and its limits are unknown.

This kind of magic is only driven by willpower, and someone can lose their determination when they lose hope. The only seen people who possess this trait are Copper, Chara, and Frisk. No one else was seen possessing this soul trait. This might be because of how rare a determination soul is. Fear is the only known negative trait that can defeat Determination, although there's a possibility there are other traits that can defeat Determination.

Bravery

Bravery is the only trait that can be divided into physical and moral aspects. This is usually balanced in each wizard, but there would rarely be a subject that possesses more or less of one aspect compared to the other. Physical Bravery resists everything very well: physical pain, hard work, exhaustion, or the possibility of receiving injuries or even death. Moral Bravery allows you to act correctly despite the dishonor, shame, or social rejection you might get from your decisions. These aspects do not define a wizard's magic power, but it might be an issue for the subject's magic if it affects them personally. This would only happen if the two aspects are not well balanced, but it is very unlikely to happen, as mentioned earlier.

Losing this trait might be the cause of humiliation or being filled with cowardice.

Justice

A justice wizard can be easily identified in a group according to their personality. They'll also usually show and manifest their traits at a very young age. Justice's magic will rarely be affected negatively by a situation since the wizard lies on their own morals and decisions to boost their magic. Even when the decision might be considered wrong by the rest, it will not affect their magic if it looks the right thing to do for the wizard. This trait is usually seen among the royalty or in charge of military and political issues.

It is possible to lose this trait when a justice soul does something in their view is incorrect or no longer has the willpower to serve justice.

Kindness

In terms of quantity, kindness is the rarest trait out of all the traits (excluding determination, of course). This was concluded merely because of the cruel nature that our species possesses. While all humans possess kindness, very few will decide to practice it and live by it with enough will power to make it their trait. Kindness wizards, while very rare, are extremely powerful. Their defensive and healing magic is unique and very well received among their allies.

Ironically as powerful as it is, the wizard itself is quite vulnerable when confronting an enemy. Due to their soft heart, a kindness wizard in combat is more likely to get killed by their enemies. Losing this trait might be a cause of selfishness or cruelty to others.

Patience

This trait's magic is extremely flexible and unpredictable. While the other traits have a common theme upon their abilities, patience's magic may manifest differently between different wizards. For example, some can basically slow down the time of the people and objects around them for a short period of time.

However, it can be described as "Time manipulation," commonly used for defensive magic. This alone has endless applications for multiple aspects, though it all depends upon the ratio and distance the wizard can cover. Sometimes the magic won't rely on the distance covered but on the number of objects being manipulated. The limitations and conditions of this type of magic are still unknown. Characters with this trait have a cyan soul.

It is normal for a child to be impatient, so children with patience souls might often lose their traits.

Integrity

While Integrity seems to make up the majority of the population, it is the trait that is more likely to lose its magic and result in what is known as a Grey Soul. It is inside a human's nature to lie or to break your own morals to do something. Even when it's the right choice, and Integrity wizard's magic can be affected by it. Compared to the other traits, their stability is very fragile. However, a good Integrity wizard will learn their own limits while some might break after a difficult situation; the emotional strength of another wizard may help them overcome way harder moral challenges.

If an Integrity wizard is both morally and emotionally strong, they might turn into one of the most powerful kinds of magic known to date.

Perseverance

Perseverance is well known for being a stable and powerful kind of magic. It's great for cutting through any defenses in combat. This trait also shares the similarity with Justice of being stable due to their magic being related to their own will power. The simple fact of having a goal in mind might even boost this wizard's magic power. It is very unlikely for this trait to lose their magic; however, it will depend on the wizard's goals, if their magic is more or less effective according to the situation presented.

To lose this trait, the person must either give up or become slothful.

Inverted Traits

A human soul can invert its trait to an artificial one, though doing so would prove lethal to said person as their soul would not be able to adapt to the change. If an inverted trait were to try and return to their original trait, they would merely end up dying, as there was already a lot of strain on the soul to begin with. Inverting one's trait is done by means of using HATE and allowing it to corrupt the soul from within, instead of HATE just coating the soul and working as an enhancer (the more Hate someone has the harder it is to control for them). Inverting a trait comes at the cost of a person's sanity and self-control, and even though said person would become more powerful due to the inversion, it comes at a high price.

The appearance of an inverted trait is a darker color of their original trait. For example, the Bravery trait is orange, while the inverted trait of Bravery, Fear, is dark orange. This would also apply to all the other soul traits, with the exception of Determination, as Determination doesn't have an inverted version of itself. When Ronan was infected by HATE in Hope, it's possible that his trait was inverted to the opposite of Justice. Infact, HATE even uses inverted-like magic from soul traits against Chara in Hope.

Fear

Fear is the inverted form of Bravery. This trait was first gained from the wizard of Bravery, Agate Lightvale, then passing her soul onto her own Bête Noire, then the latter becoming corrupted/possessed by HATE when she had died.

Determination and Fear counter each other, as only Determination can beat Fear and vice versa.

Corruption/Injustice

Corruption is the Inverted form of Justice. It's rather unknown at the moment, but it is possible when Ronan Cass was corrupted by HATE, his soul was inverted or at least induced with HATE. Both Ronan and HATE use inverted justice attacks shown in Hope; while the attack depends on the host/user, they both use energy-justice bullets.

Despair

Despair is the Inverted form of Integrity. It's rather unknown, but HATE uses it in their battle in Hope, as they use dark blue platforms against Chara and manipulate gravity via soul.

Recklessness/Aggressiveness

Recklessness/Aggression is the Inverted Patience. It's rather unknown, but HATE uses it in their battle in Hope, as they use a dark cyan tentacle-like string against Chara, in which is powerful enough to leave cracks in physical surroundings.

Wrath/Cruelty

Wrath/Cruelty is the Inverted form of Kindness. It's rather unknown at the moment, but it is possible that Miasma may have this. It is also said that HATE uses this as well when gaining a physical form, though it was not shown.

Apathy

Passivity is the Inverted form of Perseverance. It's rather unknown, but HATE uses it in their battle in Hope, as they use dark purple claws at an attempt to slash at Chara, in which left claw marks in the building next to them.

• Soul trait power is expressed slightly differently with people having mental conditions.
• People with Disassociative Identity Disorder would have more than 1 trait, which is based on each alter's individual soul traits.
• HATE is not a soul or trait. It works as an enhancer.
  • Fear isn't a soul trait either. It is an inverted form of Bravery.
• Souls react according to their characteristics.
• The souls of children are colorless.
• A person can change soul traits naturally to it's opposite, but, so far, this has never happened.
  • Soul traits can be changed with the use of a forbidden spell. But only to the opposite of that soul trait, otherwise, it’d just turn into a Grey Soul.
• All souls have all traits. The dominant trait is the one that the soul represents.
• Asriel is the only one with a monster soul having a balance between all the seven traits.
• Nobody has been born with a Grey Soul.
• Inverted traits only turn a deeper shade of their color.
• Grey souls and hollow souls are different, not an artistic choice.
• It is normal if a child doesn't share the same trait as their parents since soul traits are not inherited.

  • Amber Lightvale was a user of a Dual-Traited soul; Kindness and Integrity, so as Rave Rutrow who is a user of Justice and Perseverance.
  • People with Dual-Trait will either have heterochromia (meaning that their irises' color will be two separate colors) that depends upon their soul trait or a combination of the colors of their traits, like Amber and Rave.
• There are inverted versions of all traits excluding Determination. Camila has stated that inverted traits only turn a deeper shade of their color, not an inverted color of the soul trait color.
• Humans can absorb Boss Monster Souls.
• Combining soul traits is impossible.
• Soul traits react to emotions. It depends on a trait of the human on how they will react.
• According to Camila, there is a 5% chance of survival in the inverting of the Soul Trait.
• Soul traits get stronger whenever they're around other people who feel the same trait.
• The soul-trait of a human will always affect the color of their eyes, it'll sometimes color their hair or at least some parts of it, and it rarely colors their lips.

• Love is an enhancer and can enhance all the traits. Since loving or having affection for someone can motivate you to do things no matter what trait you have.
• Only humans with proper sync with their soul and trait can have a weapon made purely out of magic.

• If there is a crack in the soul, the lifespan of the soul's owner will be shortened.
