The SOUL is the very essence of one's being, whether one is human or monster.
History[]
Frisk's SOUL could move freely in the Bullet Board, and the border enclosed the SOUL. During the enemy's turn in an encounter, Frisk moved their SOUL to avoid attacks. Whenever, due to enough failures to do so, Frisk's HP reached 0, his SOUL was split and shattered, resulting in a Game Over. However, during the battle against Asriel Dreemurr, Frisk's Determination restored their SOUL to full HP if it reached zero. The SOUL broke as normal, the text "But it refused" displayed, and the SOUL fused back together. Also, none of Papyrus's attacks could deplete Frisk's HP, instead causing the battle to end while Papyrus took him to his shed.
Whenever Frisk collided with hazards (such as lasers or Undyne's energy spears) in the environment, they entered a brief encounter where the enemy attacked his SOUL.
Frisk's SOUL was red. However, SOUL Modes temporarily changed its color.
Types of SOULs[]
Human SOUL[]
Human SOULs have a certain uniqueness in the sense that their magic is derived into many SOUL Traits, all of which have different types of magic styles. In any one SOUL, there exists a combination of all of these Traits yet in different percentages, thus, their SOUL is colored by the Trait with the highest percentage which is considered the dominant Trait. Yet in rare circumstances, a SOUL of Determination comes to exist due to a perfect balance of the Traits.
The SOULs of humans are in the shapes of hearts, and they are superior to and stronger than monster SOULs, and for that reason, they can persist after death. A human's SOUL is not the entirety of their being, but rather their essence, housed in a physical body. This is why humans are stronger than monsters when it comes to physical attacks.
A human's experience defines their characteristics, and in turn, establishes their SOUL Trait. Any Traited human will have SOULs that bestow magic upon them, but their capabilities are reliant on what their Trait is. The primary seven SOUL Traits consist of Determination, Bravery, Justice, Kindness, Patience, Integrity and Perseverance. However, using HATE, humans can invert their Trait, such as how Agate Lightvale converted her Bravery into Fear, which recolored her orange SOUL dark orange.
Grey SOUL[]
When a SOUL is weakened and unable to utilize any power or magic because it has lost its SOUL Trait or motivation for its Trait, it turns grey. No human is born with a grey SOUL as it is not considered a Trait, but instead is the lack of one. However, humans that do not possess magic abilities, including the Traitless, do not possess a grey SOUL. A wizard's SOUL may turn grey depending on the subject's experiences and are most likely to be triggered by a traumatic experience.
This is not a permanent state, in fact, once children discover their Trait, they are also likely to have their SOUL turn grey a couple of times during their childhood. They usually revert back to their respective color once the situation that caused the problem is solved, and/or the issue becomes less frequent with the pass of time.
The problem comes when an adult wizard suffers from this. Depending on their trait, having a grey SOUL may affect not only their magic but their train of thought. In extreme cases, their personalities can be altered. A wizard with a grey SOUL are incapable of using magic.
If the SOUL is partially uncolored, their magic may not be as strong or as effective. It is recommended to seek help if the problem persists through a week or two. For adults, the longer a subject stays with a grey soul, the harder it is to get it back to normal.
Empty SOUL[]
If a human has lost their power or has been drained of their magic, their SOUL is deprived of most of its color, leaving behind a colored outline with a completely hollow body. The color of the outline is dependant on the human's SOUL Trait. Having an empty SOUL means the user still has their Trait and magic, but the ability to use magic is disabled.[1] When Chara's SOUL of Determination was empty in the resolution of the Battle of New Home, he made an extraordinary use of it by assembling the other six SOUL Traits to complete it, creating a rainbow-colored SOUL for Asriel Dreemurr.
Dual-Traited SOUL[]
In rather unique occasions, a human SOUL can host two dominant SOUL Trait which is well known as Dual-Traited SOULs. They often appear as a heart that changes color every second depending on the Trait, but in other cases, they present themselves as hearts with two colors that blend together at a certain boundary, as displayed by Rave Rutrow's own SOUL. Humans bearing this kind of SOUL can merge their Traits's magic in order to access newfound abilities, with Sae Ereny being an example as she could fuse Integrity and Patience in order to develop teleportation. However, a consequence of merging two Traits is that the user cannot utilize their Traits's separate abilities any longer.
Humans possessing Dual-Traited SOUL will likely heterochromia, with their eyes each gaining two separate colors corresponding to their Traits or both eyes showing a both colors at once.[2] If a bearer loses one of their Dual-Traits, than the perfect balance between the two Traits will break and that remaining Trait will surface as the primary one permanently. People usually lose their other Trait during their early life, due to any emotional-effecting situations they may have encountered, which makes an adult with a Dual-Traited SOUL a highly rare presence. Despite this, the dominant Trait allows them to be exceptionally powerful.[3]
Furthermore, losing a Trait will also disable the bearer to use about fifty percent of their magical power. The reason is that the average amount of power a person with a singular Trait could have is approximately thirty-to-forty percent, but Dual-Traited SOULss wield double the amount, therefore they can exploit their magical power with a seventy-to-eighty percent of effectiveness. If they were to lose one Trait, their power will be downgraded to thirty-to-forty percent.[4] The result of a Dual-Traited SOUL being inverted using HATE or used for the Bête Noire Spell would be dire and horrific.[5]
Monster SOUL[]
The SOUL of a monster is upside down and white. A monster's SOUL is weak and does not persist after death unless said monster is a Boss Monster. Monsters believe that love, hope, and compassion compose their SOULs. Nearly every monster SOUL from the Underground combined equates to the power of one human SOUL.
A monster's SOUL is deeply attuned to their body. This is why a monster becomes weaker when an enemy gains EXP and LV, and why it becomes harder for monsters to fight when they are not inclined to do so. This trait is also why when a monster dies, their form dissipates as their SOUL disappears.
