"I couldn't even give them the happy ending I promised... Please, Chara... Keep the promise I made for me... Keep my promise."
Frisk

My Promise is the fifth episode of the second season of Glitchtale.

Plot[]

At her hideout, a furious Bête Noire storms about how she should be feared. Refusing to use HATE to win her war, Bête has destroys the human SOULs that are corrupted by HATE, but spares Asriel Dreemurr's, and drains Cam's SOUL before breaking it. She then uses HATE to resurrect Asriel and fuses herself with Akumu, killing it and gaining full strength.

Meanwhile, at W. D. Gaster's House, Undyne comforts Jessica Grey as she blames her own actions for everyone's suffering, and Undyne expresses her extreme guilt over accidentally killing Alphys. Jessica assures Undyne that she knows what it is like to live with unendurable guilt, and that in order to move on, they have to accept how painful the feeling is. Suddenly, Kumulings attack the house, and when trying to save Jessica, whose SOUL is cracking, Undyne is reminded of Alphys's death before Jessica gets wounded.

Fortunately, Asgore Dreemurr rescues Jessica, returning with Toriel, W. D. Gaster, Papyrus and Frisk. While Toriel tends to Jessica's aid, Gaster heads to his old lab in the Underground with Papyrus and Sans. Asgore has a call with Ronan Cass, suggesting that they have gather citizens to a safe area where the authorities can also plan their defenses. Ronan states that they will set a perimeter around Toriel's Academy For Gifted Youngsters and the arena, but Toriel disapproves because that will make the school a bigger target for Bête. Asgore and Toriel have a dispute over this, and Asgore explains how he is willing to prioritize the Underground over himself.

In Gaster's old lab in the Underground, Gaster struggles to remember memories in his old lab, so when he tries to recall, he gets sudden traumatic suppressed memories over how he fell into the Void, forced to watch the timeline in utter despair, horrifying him. Eventually, Gaster and Papyrus begin analyzing Sans. After Papyrus leaves briefly, Gaster is dismayed that Sans has fallen down, meaning he is on the brink of death. Not wanting Papyrus to get upset, Gaster lies about Sans being fine, and snaps at Papyrus when he offers more help, but he apologizes afterwards.

Having a discussion in Gaster's living room, Frisk explains Bête's full intentions and Undyne elaborates her experience with Bête to Asgore and Toriel. A commanding Gaster declares that they all need to win the war, and that there is hope to save Asriel. However, Bête's human victims cannot be regenerated through HATE because monsters, unlike humans, are compatible with HATE, which is purely magical. Gaster instructs Asgore and Toriel to share their bond with Asriel to free him from HATE, and they deduce that Bête might attack the arena and the school next because they are populated. Undyne will go to the school while Gaster remains home to watch over Papyrus.

Bête's offensive continues in Determino City, where the police, including Ronan, protect civilians from the Fear Blobs. A battle begins with Frisk against Bête while Asgore and Toriel are engaged in a fight against a brainwashed Asriel. Frisk and Bête fight fiercely as Asgore and Toriel attempt to express their love to Asriel, but their son is blinded by HATE, forcing the heroes to flee. Returning to the lab, Toriel heals Asgore's shoulder wound and tearfully discusses how they would help their son. Frisk then comes up with a plan, and he reveals it to Gaster in private.

In exchange for executing the plan, Gaster gains a sample of Frisk's blood. Frisk talks about Gaster's experiment with the CORE ages ago, where he wanted to fuel it with Determination, but it got him trapped in the Void. He requests for Gaster to redo his experiment using Frisk's determination, and although Gaster is traumatized by the CORE Accident, he accepts Frisk's request. As the experiment succeeds, Gaster wishes Frisk good luck before the latter is transported to the Void as part of the plan.

In the Void, Frisk reunites with an embittered Chara, and starts trying to make a deal with him. Chara understands the severity of the situation when Frisk reveals he destroyed the Reset button, and that if the timeline gets erased, they cannot get the same results back. They both jokingly insult each other before Frisk explains that he wants Chara to take his place in the timeline, and Frisk will supposedly take Chara's place as a ghost partner.

Chara accepts this and is given Frisk's SOUL to return to life, but Frisk then admits the truth. He cannot return with Chara, because Frisk is glitched, and therefore, if he reenters the timeline, it will erase itself. Without Chara's consent, Frisk presses a button that ultimately replaces him with Chara, causing everyone's memories of Frisk to be erased, with some being altered with Chara taking Frisk's position. While Frisk is being forgotten, Chara heart wrenchingly begs Frisk not to do it, but the deed is done, and Chara, with rewritten memories, is restored to his home dimension. Frisk remains in the Void to be erased from existence, and he pleads for Chara to keep his promise to make everyone a happy ending.

In a different, destroyed and glitched universe, Asriel Dreemurr wakes up after his conversation with Flowey. He does not have a blanket over him and the Heart Locket is not on his drawer. Asriel remembers that he left his locket at Toriel's House and that Frisk needs his help. In the past, Goner Kid asks Frisk if he has imagined a world where everything is the same, except he does not exist, which is a thought that terrifies Goner Kid.

Trivia[]

  • Camila Cuevas released one of her friend's reactions to the episode in a Tumblr post.[1]
  • Camila Cuevas also published a GIF in a post.
  • On March 22, 2018, Camila Cuevas said that, due to animating too much, she triggered her already injured wrist.[2]
  • The actual events of Glitchtale have not been changed. Rather, the characters's memories were either changed or erased, depending on the changes Frisk made.[3]
  • In an unnamed video, there was a hidden message written in Morse Code, possibly saying, "I failed them."
    • The unnamed video has been removed by Camila Cuevas. Instead, the video is now the post-credits scene of My Promise.
  • Most of the other characters's memories will add up if shared. But they will only conclude that their memories were affected in some way.[4]
  • The text after the post-credits scene were the exact words Goner Kid would say in Undertale.
  • Frisk's dialogue boxes are usually similar to text boxes in Undertale, a fully opaque black box with white borders. However, shortly after giving his SOUL to Chara, his dialogue boxes lose their white borders and opacity.
  • Now that Frisk is gone, what happened in the Battle of New Home changed in Chara and Asriel Dreemurr's memories. Instead the six human SOULs worked together to create a special SOUL for Asriel, and were able to break the barrier through a combined effort.[5]
  • Frisk no longer exists, even in the Void.
    • The Void is basically the game files, so Frisk has been completely removed from the game's data.
