Magic is the practice of harnessing various forms of energy that encompasses many different forms.
History[]
Chromatic Magic[]
Also referred to as Chroma Magic, it works around a person's SOUL, manifesting into seven different forms, those being Determination, Bravery, Justice, Integrity, Kindness, Perseverance and Patience.[1] These seven categories compose the SOUL Traits that humans could develop, depending on their emotions and experiences. Their architecture, weapons and even medical care are based upon using a blend of magical forces and technology. Their society features many legends about magical creatures and sorcery. However, there are certain humans who could not discover their SOUL Trait, thus being unable to access magic. Monsters lack the ability to develop a Trait, but Undyne and Sans are some of the few exceptions. Furthermore, without needing a Trait, some monsters can harness this energy in weapons they summon, with Chromatic Hands being an example, and even man-made tools like the Real Knife can contain all seven Traits. Being highly versatile, it can be used to generate constructs of tangible energy, such as melee weapons and shields.
Long ago, someone attempted to master the three practices Chromatic, Runic and Umbral Magic, but it resulted in the Cataclysm, followed by a war where Runic and Umbral Magic almost completely disappeared, and Chromatic Magic almost did as well. However, Irral retained his Chromatic Magic and kept it to himself for a long period of time and waited, until he thought it was safe to share it with everyone else again.[2]
Monster Magic[]
Having a body composition comprised of magic, monsters are naturally capable of accessing their own magical abilities, though certain categories of monsters are specialized with a specific form of powers. Identical to Chromatic Magic, monsters can use energy to heal people, and a physical sign of this is a green aura surrounding their hand and another aura patching up the wound. Each monster has the talent of summoning attacks, which are either a strike constructed purely from the magic they harness or weapons materialized through this same energy. Their attacks are also known to have their own types, which includes blue attacks, which will only harm the target if they make movements.
However, not every monster has the equal amount of power or strength. For example, Boss Monsters with goat-like physiques, most notably members of the Monster Royal Family, can wield and generate fire using their own bare hands. Monsters who resemble skeletons can summon bones of various sizes as one of their primary weapons, whether as projectiles or from physical surfaces, and their attacks are themed around skeletons, such as the Gaster Blaster that bear physical similarities to a monstrous skull.
Runic Magic[]
A powerful form of magic that studies the body that of a person. They are primarily strange-looking symbols that command an inanimate object or organic material to have a specific behavior or perform certain actions. Runic Magic ranges from activating a clock to shapeshifting a user's own body, and an example of these spells is the forbidden Bête Noire Spell. Other capabilities include the resurrection of a corpse and allowing it to be immortal to the passage of time. Those who practice this on their own bodies have to train them to remain strong since Runic Magic puts a strain on the body of the user.
It is the most flexible out of the three popular kinds of magic and it easily interacts with Chromatic and Umbral Magic through arnicite. However, complex aspects of this magic like the Bête Noire Spell were forgotten, and it is not common knowledge. People's current knowledge of Runic Magic is limited to direct things towards a certain direction and its study is heavily restricted. By the 13th Century, Runic Magic was practically extinct, becoming a myth at best. Despite this, it is not entirely abandoned.[1]

Umbral Magic[]
A rarely known form of magic that centers around the mind of the user. Umbral mages used the constellations in the night sky for their magic, and in Meropos, the constellations visible in the sky are for the most part magical constructs. They show up once a day, with some once a week/month/year of even centuries. Umbral mages, those with a strong mind, are able to draw power from the constellations. Say the archer constellation is visible in the night sky, the mage would be able to draw a celestial-looking bow and shoot magic from it as long as the constellation is shining in the sky. More than one constellation can be used at the same time but it taxes the mind. Rarer constellations require stronger minds to use, and if people push it they might lose their minds and become insane forever. By the 13th Century, Umbral Magic was practically not in use to the point it was extinct, becoming a myth. Despite this, it is still extremely, rarely used.

Types of Magic[]
Chromatic Magic[]
- Determination: Humans who have SOULs filled with Determination possess the most powerful and rare of the SOUL Traits. Physical indications of this Trait include the color red, as represented by their SOUL, weapons summoned and attacks. Being able to surpass all the other Traits and most of the Inverted SOUL Traits, Determination is on par with Fear, the Inverted variant of Bravery. However, according to W. D. Gaster, Determination is limitless unlike Fear. This Trait is solely stemmed from willpower, so the user's strength depends on their will to live.
