"This is not about forgetting what happened. You have to accept how bad it feels, so you can move on. It took me twenty years to understand that, and it led me to hurt others in the process."
―Jessica Grey to Undyne[src]

Director Jessica Grey was the head of the Anti-Monsters Department, the District Leader of Determino succeeding Noah Rutrow, and the mother of Alina Grey Rutrow. After her daughter ran away, Jessica fell into a state of depression, losing her SOUL Trait of Integrity. Twenty years later, monsters were freed from the Underground, but Jessica distrusted them, so Frisk spent a month convincing her that monsters were allies to humans. However, Jessica swore revenge on them after learning that Asgore Dreemurr murdered her daughter, forming a temporary alliance with Bête Noire. She then played a major role in Sans's death, to which she deeply regretted and started redeeming herself, but she could not be forgiven by W. D. Gaster. Eventually, as Jessica and Gaster scouted through Determino City, they were attacked by the Kumuzilla, who sent rubble entrapping them. Following a last, remorseful conversation with Gaster, Jessica sacrificed herself by saving Gaster, leading to her getting crushed to death. Finally, Jessica happily reunited with her family in the Afterlife.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Jessica Grey once had a husband and a child, but her husband died in a car crash. Having a huge position in the AMD and having to take care of a child by herself, Jessica was very busy. As a result, she didn't get to spend very much time with Alina, her child.

One fateful day, Jessica made a promise to Alina that she would come to her dance recital. However, when she arrived, she realized that she was too late; the dance recital ended and her daughter was missing. This led to Jessica losing her soul trait (Integrity), resulting in a grey soul.

Continue[]

Jessica only made a short cameo in the after-credits scene. She was seen saying that humans are superior, and the thought that humans and monsters are equal was idiotic.

My Sunshine[]

As AMD's (Anti Monster Department's) leader, her job is to monitor the monsters, and if they attempt to do bad things, the AMD will send out a hand to detain the monsters and help humans as much as they can.

Frisk tried to get Jessica to come to the reunion to sign a peace treaty between monsters and humans. At fit's, she refused. But, when Frisk mentioned her family when they offered to show her that monsters were harmless creatures, she agreed. Frisk took Jessica and Bete arrive at Gaster's laboratory, where Gaster explained his work on the "Core" and its purpose, impressing Jessica that not only the energy of the future will be sufficient but unlimited as well.

After visiting Gaster; Jessica, Frisk, and Betty enter her car again. In this scene, Jessica's eyes seem to have a tint of blue, it is unknown if this actually meant anything, or is just a possible error.

Then, Bete, Frisk, and Jessica move on to Toriel's new school, showing Jessica how humans can control their soul powers. This is where Jessica had a flashback about her daughter. She then left the school crying.

Jessica recalling her daughter

During the meeting held about whether the monsters would be allowed to stay on the surface, it is revealed that Jessica's daughter was the last human child to be killed by Asgore, who had a Dark Blue SOUL (Integrity). It is also revealed Jessica's flashback that her daughter ran away because Jessica didn't attend her dance recital. When Jessica learns that Asgore killed her daughter, this worsened the relationship between monsters and humans. This led to Jessica making a deal with a shadow-like creature (Bete) to avenge her daughter by destroying all monsters.

Dust[]

While Frisk, Sans, and Papyrus are at Mettaton's show, a hallucination of a girl resembling Agate Lightvale (Bete's creator/"mother") was found on top of a construction crane and cries for help, attracting Papyrus' attention. At the same time, Jessica is in a dark alley holding the AMR, which disables a monster's powers but may crack the user's soul. Since Papyrus is unaware of the function of each button, the hallucination tricks him into pressing a green button, letting go of the heavy concrete beams the crane was holding.

Dust 116

Jessica aiming the AMR at Sans

Sans uses his powers to stop them from falling on the humans, while Frisk was telling everyone to leave. Jessica then fired a bolt at Sans, draining his magic and causing him to drop the load since he was using his powers to hold them.

Later, Jessica and Bete team up again to take their revenge on Sans And Asriel who were at AMD Headquarters, looking at the camera footage around the city. Sans and Asriel, unknown of their visitors, watch a camera-feed of Frisk opening a shield in front of Bete to protect her (in episode 1 we see a car going to hit Bete) from nothing. Sans tells Asriel to warn the others. During all of this, Gaster reads a story about two siblings who created the barrier.

At the security room, Bete comes in and reveals her true nature and the pink soul's trait, Fear. Sans prepares for battle but gets shot by Jessica shortly, which nullifies his powers. Bete deceptively turns into Chara to lower Asriel's guard but just before his soul is taken by Bete's spear, Sans teleports in front of him with the little energy he had, shielding Asriel and taking the hit as he gets his soul eaten by Akumu. Asriel suddenly remembered what Sans said to warn the others. He then escapes, leaving only Jessica and Bete in the room. Bete asked for the vial of hate that Jessica is holding, but Jessica refuses. She then experiences a horrifying hallucination of her daughter, Alina, who is covered in scars as she smiles horrifyingly.

Do or Die[]

Jessica goes to the prison where Asgore and Papyrus are held in bars, Jessica asks Undyne to open the cells but Undyne refuses. Jessica reveals her AMD card, allowing her to see Asgore then both of them talk how about how sorry they were but then Jessica goes to Papyrus' Cell and tells him how she was also sorry about the role she played on Sans' death. Papyrus forgives her, thus she gains her trait of integrity back (Blue). Jessica and the others reach Gaster's home when Bete's pink blobs were attacking the city. She gets assaulted by Asriel and Gaster but Papyrus summons a Gaster blaster to shield her from the attacks.

Later in the episode, Jessica with Dr. Alphys and Gaster when he going to fight Bete and Akumu. Jessica watches with Dr. Alphys but when Gaster nearly loses his life, Alphys goes in and sacrifices herself to kill Bete with the Nullifier. Dr. Alphys, before clicking the button, told Jessica to leave with Gaster using a Teleporter that teleports humans and monsters. They reach prison where Undyne worries about Alphys but rushes in to see injured Gaster and Miss Grey. Jessica tells Undyne that Alphys was remained behind to kill Bete. Undyne being worried about Alphys rushes into the Nullifier Room as fast as she can only to find out that she was too late.

Love Part 1[]

After Gaster had regained consciousness after almost being killed by Bete, he reacted negatively to her, telling her to keep her hands off of him. Later in the episode, Papyrus granted her permission to use Gaster's screens to alert the humans of the Creatures of Fear, telling them to only go out of their houses in the company of a monster. Frisk also gave Jessica her daughter's clothes. (The Tutu and the Ballet shoes) then the text appears showing her reaction to her daughter's disappearance: "What do you mean she's not here??! She was performing an hour ago!! My Sunshine?!?? Where are you?! Please..."  Then she said that Frisk is a "kind and compassionate" child. But Frisk denies that, which showed their change in personality.

Love Part 2[]

Capture-3

Jessica speaking to Ronan

At the beginning of the Episode, Jessica speaks with Ronan, a member of the HSO military forces. She is informed that their best wizards (Not to be confused with The Seven Wizards) are making sure that anything magical cannot get in or out. Jessica then says that no one knows how to deal with Bete, and sending out men to fight Bete may just cause more casualties. At the end of the scene, Jessica seems to have signed the Peace Agreement Form.

Later in the episode, Gaster then becomes suspicious of Jessica and discovers that she has something to do with HATE. Gaster then realized that Akumu had eaten the HATE vial during the battle between Undyne and Bete. Gaster then regrets meeting Jessica and doesn't want to hear any more of her apologies, her hair and eyes turn gray, however, it is not confirmed if she really did lose her trait.

During the battle between Frisk and Bete, Jessica is left with Undyne to keep watch on her as Toriel, Gaster, and Asgore follow Papyrus.

My Promise[]

After the opening scene with Bete and Kumu, Jessica was seen with Undyne, who was still lying in bed. The two talked together but, it was interrupted when Jessica heard a sound at the door. She decided to go check it out, only to find a bunch of Fear blobs who successfully broke into the house.

JessAMR

Jessica using the AMR against a Pink blob

In order to defend herself, she picked up the AMR which was on a nearby table. A blob slammed her against the wall but she destroyed it by firing the AMR. Undyne joined Jessica as more Blobs began to come in. While fighting a blob, Jessica fired the AMR in its direction but it dodged it. However, it was cornered and Jessica tried to kill it by firing the AMR, only for the attack to fail because she collapsed. After the blob stabbed Jessica in the chest, the blob was killed by Asgore who hurled his trident at it.

A bit later, Jessica was seen unconscious in bed while Toriel was trying to heal her.

Game Over Part 1[]

Jessans

The first time she appears is when Ronan calls about Rave. Being told the situation, she looks around, finding that Toriel offered her clothes in case she needed to go outside. Jessica told Ronan to bring her a car and her field suit before hanging up. Jessica then puts on Toriel's clothes, then tries to get out of the house.

Toriel then calls Jessica, taking her by surprise. Jessica, embarrassed about wearing Toriel's clothes, answers saying that she's much better and says thanks to her for the clothes. Jessica then hopes their car will get there before more people arrive, and if it weren't ironic enough, Papyrus comes in, embarrassing her more, and says Jessica should be feeling much better. Jessica is okay until she looks beside Papyrus, where Gaster is standing, increasing her embarrassment. Toriel then asks Jessica why she is out of bed since she should be resting. Jessica tells her that her men need her at the center of the city. When Toriel argues that it's too dangerous for Jessica to leave while injured, Papyrus offers to go with her.

Gaster, however, refuses to let Papyrus go, saying it's too dangerous for him. This causes a small fight between the two, which Jessica watches in surprise.

After the fight resides, Jessica hears her ride and said that it's time to go. Gaster offers to go with her instead of Papyrus as Papyrus protects the lab, and he agrees.

Game Over Part 2[]

Jessica on train

Jessica on the train with Gaster

Jessica goes on a train with Gaster after finishing a phone call, confirming to the person she's speaking to that Ronan's in charge. She explains to Gaster that they must head to the school to help Undyne keep everyone safe. The train grows silent for a bit, but then they both talk at the same time. Jessica insists for him to go first, to which Gaster replies he wants to talk, but he's unable to put his thoughts into words and needs a nap. She questions if he'd be comfortable or even able to sleep on the train, but before she finishes asking, she already finds him asleep.

Once she arrives at Rave's hut, Rave brings up her past and current failures, and Jessica elaborates that she does not want anyone else to die. He uses the fact that she couldn't keep both her job and daughter against her, to which she grants him permission to rule over the city once the situation is dealt with. She plans to help Ronan evacuate citizens and stares down at a teleporter as the scene ends.

As Jessica and Gaster travel to the school, Jessica notes that she can feel the ground moving. Both of them come face-to-face with the Kumuzilla. Jessica shouts to run, and Gaster holds a shield up to protect them. As they fight the Kumuzilla, Jessica calls Rave and grants him permission to use 'whatever (he) brought to help.' Jessica notices Gaster visibly straining, unable to hold the shield for much longer, and then he loses all energy and faints. She shouts his name as the building begins to collapse.

When she wakes up, she notices Gaster unconscious and wakes him up, asking if he's injured. He tells her that he isn't injured much, but is stuck. Jessica notices she still has her teleporter and suggests using it, though she notices Gaster's distress and asks him what's wrong. He responds saying that's a teleporter for only one person. He insists that she uses it, to which she refuses. Jessica attempts to lift the rock, trying to free Gaster. He asks why she's even bothering showing kindness to him, commenting on how awful he's been to her. Jessica pulls out her gun and amplifies the magic output as an attempt to destroy the rubble, but her SOUL cracks before she can use it. She begins throwing up blood and Gaster instructs her to leave, saying if she doesn't, they'll both die. He apologizes for everything and asks her to leave, as the place is about to completely collapse. She smiles and asks if she can say one more thing before they part ways.

Give her hell

"Give her hell for me."

She activates the teleporter and forces it into Gaster's hand. She then says, "Give her hell for me," with her eyes and hair turn fully blue, regaining her Integrity. Gaster realizes what she did, and his eyes are full of terror and shock. Unable to stop it, he teleports away and Jessica is left alone, crying, but still smiling as she looks at her picture with Alina. A rock is seen above her, and as it crashes down, she closes her eyes and smiles.

Game Over P2 - Grey family group hug

Jessica promising her family will be together forever

After dying, she sees her daughter, Alina, and her husband, Noah. She appears to be in some sort of afterlife with her deceased family. Alina comments that they missed her and asks if she's done working and if they could play together. She touches Alina's face and asks if she can hug her. As they hug, Jessica holds her daughter tight, apologizing. She promises that they will all be together forever and they fade away into the light.

Ḣ̸͈a̷̞̽ẗ̵̥́e̸̟͒[]

Jessica makes a minor appearance in the Gaster and Rave scene, at first Rave is seen talking with Jessica with a worried face, where Jessica's voice could be heard and suddenly the signal lost after the sound of falling rocks is heard. Soon after that, Rave sees the teleporter, it triggers a flashback of a convo with her, shows Jessica giving Rave

Jessica

"We'll talk later"

paperwork to sign as well as placing the triangle on a table, and apologizes about Alina, and saying Noah would be proud of him. She then leaves the tent and says "We will talk later", not knowing this would be the last time she would take a step in there.

Animosity[]

We see her here when Rave visits the afterlife and talks with Noah. Sadly though, we only see her for a brief moment in the afterlife as her silhouette is seen in the background playing happily with her daughter Alina.

Personality[]

During her debut, Jessica seemed to be persistent. As the leader of the AMD, she seems determined to keep the scales between humans and monsters align and believed that humans are superior to monsters. She was highly antagonistic towards monsters. When Jessica found out that Asgore murdered her daughter, she reacted negatively and became vengeful towards Monster-kind. And plotted to exterminate monsters.

While Jessica worked with Bete, she seemed to believe that she was doing good by "avenging" her daughter. She was so blinded by revenge that she went as far as possibly killing herself, an example is when she used the Nullifier gun (which could damage the user's soul) and used it on Sans. She didn't really go far with avenging her daughter though. When Bete tortured her in Dust, she had a change of heart and decided to side with the other protagonists. She was no longer considered a villain after this.

In Do or Die, when she apologized for her actions and asked for Asgore and Papyrus' forgiveness, she clearly regretted playing a part in Sans' death and became remorseful. After Papyrus forgave her, she regained her trait, Integrity. After her redemption, she revealed that she is helpful, kind, and committed to taking down Bete. She seems to be constantly trying to regain the trust of Gaster, after contributing to Sans' death, this is most likely because she doesn't want to be considered a bad person or because she wanted to redeem herself after causing so many deaths.

After Gaster insulted her again in Love, she was consumed by the guilt of the many deaths, and injuries she caused. Claiming that she only causes trouble to the other protagonists. Though she seems to be compliant to others, despite being wounded as seen in Game Over.

Due to being a tragic character, Jessica likely suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (or PTSD). This is shown when she would get flashbacks about her and Alina and deeply regrets causing her daughter to run off to Mt. Ebott.

Trivia[]

  • Jessica is about forty-seven years old.[1]
  • Bete's horrific actions in Dust was enough for Jessica to realize she was doing evil instead of doing good and serving justice to her daughter.
  • Jessica's soul is grey, only if she doesn't regain her trait (Integrity).[2]
  • There is a canon conversation, never before in the series. Jessica Grey and Bête Noire are making out a plan and talking about HATE.[3]
  • Coming from Camila, Jessica has done many wrong things in her life excluding the contribution to Sans' "death" in Dust.[4]
  • Jessica's soul may be really fragile because her soul isn't "concentrated" enough.[5]
  • Someone in Tumblr mentioned that Jessica had the same "purpose" as Asgore: annihilating the opposite race.[6]
  • Her last name, Grey, might be describing her current state as a character; depressing and tragic. The intermediate shade grey itself usually means depression and dullness. And before she was redeemed she was a neutral character, and grey is a shade that stands between black and white, which means it is a neutral shade.
  • Jessica was one of the characters that spoke in the "Arial" font. This was eventually changed to Determination Sans near the end of Do or Die then shifted back to Arial then back to Determination Sans in the middle of Love Part 1.
  • Jessica appears to be slowly dying due to the fact that she used the AMR three times, as shown when her soul partly cracked in Dust and in Love (Part 1).
    • This is further supported by the fact that she coughed out blood in the latter episode.
    • Also, in My Promise, Toriel states that she doesn't know if she can fully heal her.
  • There is an unused voice line for Jessica that was supposed to be used at the end of My Sunshine.

    • It was later used in the Glitchtale Season 2 Compilation.
  • Jessica's soul will only stop cracking if she stops using the AMR. And as a result of all the cracking, her lifespan has shortened. [7]
  • According to Camila, the others will eventually discover that Jessica contributed to the Crane Accident in Dust, but due to the recent death of Jessica would not be able to do or say anything to her. [8]
  • In Game Over Part 2, Gaster knew he wasn't ready to forgive Jessica. When he said those words it was more of a way to make her leave, it wasn't a heartfelt forgiving moment and Jessica felt that which is why her hair didn't go back to blue when she heard the words she's been wanting to hear for past days. He said it so he could feel a bit better about dying under the rubble because the guilt over everything else was eating him inside. Jessica noticed this but kept it to herself, and so, waited for the last second to do her move. Jessica knew Gaster wouldn't forgive her, at least not that fast. What gave Jessica's trait back, in the end, was, despite Gaster not forgiving her, she still did what was right and made up to her own mistakes doing the ultimate sacrifice. These were the true intentions of that scene.[9]
