"We can make this future whatever we want it to be. I want to make it something good."
"Heh. Whatever we want it to be... I don't really know what I want, Asriel. That's what's so hard. But for the very first time... when I think about the future, I have hope."
Asriel Dreemurr and Chara

Hope is the ninth and final episode of the second season of Glitchtale.

Synopsis[]

Papyrus attempts to evacuate Gaster, as Chara and Asriel make their final stand against HATE. Meanwhile, Rave and Ronan face an unexpected threat of their own.

Plot[]

After the Kumuzilla's death, Undyne and Ronan Cass rest on a rooftop. Wanting to check on Rave Rutrow, Ronan uses his magic to propel himself and Undyne off the rooftop and onto the street. They arrive at Determino City Park, where Rave asks Raven to recharge his Arnicite Healing Device. All the Kindness wizards are exhausted, and Rave explains to Ronan the troubles that occurred for them while capturing the Kumuzilla. Rave also admits that he manually powered the Avalon by himself, asserting that, as a good leader, he would sacrifice his life for his people.

Suddenly, a pink explosion erupts in the distance, catching everyone's attention. An inactive Kumuling transforms into HATE, and it tries to attack Rave after sensing his dual-traited SOUL. However, Ronan pushes Rave out of the way and gets impaled, allowing the blob to infest Ronan. HATE takes possession over Ronan's body and uses the officer's magic to fight the HSO Armed Forces, whose defenses are slightly futile against "Ronan". Since everyone is tired and nearly out of magic, Rave is panicked as he does not know what to do now.

Inside his mind, Ronan is in an illusion projected by HATE. In it, he is in a hospital room with his late wife Zoe Phenix bedridden. When Ronan attempts to leave to help his allies, "Zoe" becomes mutilated and reminds him about when he left the real Zoe's hospital room in the past. As she overwhelms Ronan with his guilt, he decides to stay, promising to never leave her side so that she will be fine. In the real world, Rave reclaims his charged Healing Device and plans to trap "Ronan" until reinforcements would arrive.

Rave runs into battle, but he is shot with "Ronan"'s projectiles. The real Ronan is trapped inside the illusion, and Rave is saved by Raven. Tobias traps "Ronan" in a Shield of Kindness, but he breaks loose. Ronan continues attempting to escape HATE in his mind, and Rave realizes that using sufficient force against Ronan's body could free him from HATE. Recounting Noah Rutrow's words of encouragement, Rave prevents "Ronan" from killing Hugo Phenix and Undyne before head-butting him, causing the HATE to be forced out of Ronan. Undyne then uses her spear to explode the blob. Rave passes out from his wounds while Ronan tears up, so Raven and Tobias attempt to heal Rave using their magic. Raven assures Ronan that none of this is his fault before the team begins escorting Rave to a hospital.

At the Determino City Arena, Kindness wizards try their best to heal Mettaton. While Toriel tends to Asgore Dreemurr's wounds, she expresses her motives for leaving the kingdom of monsters behind and remaining alone in the Ruins. She states that she could not recognize she was broken due to the loss of both Chara and Asriel Dreemurr, and instead resolved to reside next to Chara's grave, promising to never leave him again, regardless of what was necessary to do so, including allowing the six human children to continue into the Underground. Toriel concludes that Bête Noire was wrong about her emotions, as the entire time, she had truly only despised herself, rather than Asgore.

Toriel continues that she had lost hope for an extremely great duration, but after fighting alongside Asgore, she finally understood his true emotions of how he had done everything in pursuit of his kingdom's betterment. After hearing Toriel's apology, Asgore voices about how long they have known each other, and the bond they have together could never be broken. Although the scars of their past will take time to heal, Asgore wishes to be Toriel's comforting friend. A technician successfully saves Mettaton, explaining that Mettaton's core and SOUL are merged, so magic electricity serves as his own blood.

In the streets, Chara and Asriel begin a fight against a Fear-powered HATE. Chara demands Asriel to evacuate Papyrus and W. D. Gaster to safety, but then HATE attacks. The animosity-fuelled Chara proceeds to protect himself against the immensely powerful HATE, who takes a humanoid appearance. Chara decides to lure HATE to a more open space while the creature utilizes Determination. HATE then punches Chara into the canyon where Frisk first fought Bête. The battle becomes more intense and brutal, and eventually, they are in combat with each of them wielding a Sword of Determination.

Asriel arrives with his Chaos Saber, and they are engaged in a two-on-one brawl. When Asriel is impaled by HATE, his SOUL refuses to die, and he transforms into the God of Hyperdeath, unleashing a greater amount of strength against the opposing creature. The battle allows Chara and Asriel to strike HATE with various attacks, and Asriel summons Hyper Goner to inhale HATE, restraining it. Taking the opportunity, Chara uses all his remaining magic to create determination slashes which charge at HATE, resulting in a massive, rainbow-colored explosion. Accepting its defeat, HATE disintegrates in front of the two brothers, who are relieved but exhausted. They rest in the canyon, stare at the sky full of stars, and acknowledge their strong brotherhood.

Three days later, at Charis Itov Memorial Hospital, Rave wakes up near Ronan. He confirms to Rave about Determino City's survival and reconstruction, though Rave feels guilty for sleeping through as Determino's leader. Ronan assures Rave that he can rest, and since he felt responsibility over the mayhem at the park, he chose to watch Rave as his friend. Afterwards, he meets with his spiteful mother, Grace Rutrow, who rebukes and belittles Rave for the negative outcomes of his actions as a leader, insulting Jessica Grey as well. Ultimately, Ronan furiously scolds her, giving light to how much Rave did to protect everyone, how much he cared, and that Grace is wrong, defeating her in the argument. Ronan proceeds to comfort Rave, reassuring that he will be his friend to aid him forever, warming Rave's heart.

Gaster wakes up in his own room with Papyrus. The scientist openly regrets having Papyrus hurt in battle, but Papyrus remorsefully states how he blames himself for being unable to help him more in battle, which he believes could have allowed Sans to live longer. He also weeps about how he could have been more violent like his family, sitting at the tip of his regrets. Gaster, remembering from a past experience, responds that Papyrus's kindness allowed Sans to spend time with his family one last time, and that Papyrus's strength is being able to voice out reason to anyone. He adds up that Papyrus is the sole reason Gaster has escaped the darkness, concluding that he should never change his ways. With that, the father and son embrace each other.

Many years later, Asgore visits Toriel, Chara and Asriel. Chara receives a call about being recruited into the Wizard Council, earning compliments from his adoptive mother. Asriel supports this, saying that they will make the world a better place. At night, the brother gaze into the sky full of stars. Chara admits he never expected humans and monsters to be at peace again, expressing nervousness for the future. Asriel speaks that Chara deserves a better future, being optimistic for the future. Chara becomes more at ease, saying that now, when he thinks about the future, he has hope.

As time passes by, everyone of the heroes live out their lives lightheartedly. On the constitutional ceremony of Determino's Wizard Council, including Hugo, Robin, Seth, Zachary, Lily and Abigail. Chara and Asriel happily watch the ceremony, wearing their Heart Lockets which display a portion of the Delta Rune. Following this, Gaster appears to be suffering a mental breakdown in a room with a mirror. Looking up, he sees the reflection of a monstrous, shadowy figure looming behind him, and the creature, resembling Gaster, glitches above him.
