"I have no intentions to leave the room until that thing is erased from its miserable existence."
W. D. Gaster to Alphys

Do or Die is the third episode of the second season of Glitchtale.

Synopsis[]

After Frisk learns of Sans' death, Betty launches an attack across the city. To stop her, Gaster, Alphys, and Jessica come up with a plan.

Plot[]

Do or Die 023

At Toriel's House, Frisk practices apologizing to Sans when a dismayed Asriel Dreemurr returns. Upon realizing that Sans had died, Frisk is heartbroken and loses some of his Determination, but he tries to stay determined as Asriel says that they have to warn the others. Meanwhile, Bête Noire and Akumu prepare to harvest SOULs. Akumu can still drain magic from Sans's SOUL, meaning they have enough power to start their plan.

Do or Die 079

At the Determino City Police Station, an injured Jessica Grey speaks with Asgore Dreemurr and Undyne. Asgore apologizes for killing Alina Grey Rutrow, but Jessica admits that she did something horrible and needs his help, since everyone is in danger. After confessing to being involved in the murder of Sans, a saddened Undyne allows Jessica to apologize to Papyrus, who sensed that Sans had died. Jessica tearfully apologizes for her involvement, and although she does not believe she should be forgiven by anyone, Papyrus forgives her, prompting Jessica to regain her Integrity.

Do or Die 107

Frisk and Asriel go to W. D. Gaster's House, where Alphys is present and W. D. Gaster is mournful outside. Gaster tells Frisk that right now, he cannot fight Bête and that there can only be one determination SOUL and one Fear SOUL existing at the same time. He further explains that only determination and fear can defeat each other. Gaster encourages Frisk to not be afraid, since Fear can be defeated while determination cannot, so Frisk has no limits, which recharges Frisk's determination.

Do or Die 131

Suddenly, the house is attacked by Kumulings, so Frisk, Gaster, Asriel and Alphys begin destroying them. At one moment, a blob shapeshifts into Sans, but Gaster cannot be fooled by its tricks and easily decimates it. Gaster tells Frisk to check Toriel's Academy For Gifted Youngsters with Asriel, since the blobs might be all around Determino City. He assures Frisk that he and Alphys have a plan and that he himself will not fail.

Do or Die 173

Undyne, Papyrus, Jessica and Asgore arrive, and upon seeing Jessica, Gaster tries to blast her, but Papyrus blocks the attack. After a brief dispute about Jessica, Gaster reluctantly accepts her help. Gaster states that Frisk, Asriel and Asgore will be teleported to the school while Undyne protects civilians. Upon appearing at the school, Asgore asks Asriel to play catch with him afterwards, to which he agrees. They begin fending off blobs inside the school, saving the students.

Do or Die 236

At the CORE's Expansion Facility, Gaster, Alphys and Jessica formulate their plan, with the former declaring that he has no intentions to leave the room until Bête is killed. As Bête is entering the facility, Gaster locks himself in the vast Nullifier Room, an area that exterminates humans and monsters, with Bête. The two begin battling each other, with Gaster utilizing his Chromatic Hands while is using the shapeshifting Akumu.

Do or Die 289

Meanwhile at school, Cam, Robin and Abigail search for Lily. Frisk comes to assist them and slay blobs that approach them. Eventually, Cam manages to save his sister Lily. Back in the facility, Gaster has been using a lot of effort in trying to hit Bête as Akumu is charging up his power using the SOULs consumed by the blobs. Gaster starts gaining the upper hand, being able to attack Bête with his weapons. Akumu is injured, and Gaster is about to use a giant Gaster Blaster and two gigantic hands on them.

Do or Die 314

Bête is able to power up once a blob kills Cam and takes his SOUL. Her hair turns fully pink, and Bête uses Rhabdophobia, which allows her to take control over Gaster's weapons, terrifying him. Gaster is forced to be struck with his own Blaster, and afterwards, he is thrown by his giant hand, and as he is falling, he recalls his accident at the CORE ages ago. A defeated Gaster believes himself to be a failure and decides to use Plan B, but he is stabbed in the back by Bête.

Do or Die 336

Jessica and Alphys arrive to challenge Bête. Alphys has a plan against Bête, so she instructs Jessica to use the Gadgetries to teleport herself and Gaster away. The original plan was to activate the Nullifier if Gaster failed to kill Bête, but Alphys refuses to watch it happen and is willing to not play the coward this time. After Jessica and Gaster are teleported away, Alphys uses a Gadgetry to shield herself before activating the Nullifier. During this, Undyne learns that Alphys is still at the Facility, so she runs off to help her.

Do or Die 388

After the extermination sequence is finished, Bête impales Alphys and reveals she is not a monster nor human. When Undyne enters the room, she supposedly sees Bête preparing to kill Alphys while having her pink SOUL floating outside her body. She throws her spear towards the SOUL, but this is a hallucination that Bête was creating, and in reality, that is Alphy's SOUL. The spear destroyed Alphy's SOUL, much to Undyne's horror as Alphys faded into dust. Bête then ruthlessly spears Undyne with her own weapon, causing Undyne's body to start shattering. However, through her own determination and will to kill Bête, Undyne transforms into The Undying, knowing it is do or die. Despite this, Bête does not believe Undyne's spears are stronger.

  • [9:16]: Unknown Error: When Frisk speaks, the background text is transparent instead of a black box with outlines

  • [23:26]: Animation Error: W. D. Gaster's hand is bent in a weird way

Trivia[]

  • Before this episode was published, Camila Cuevas revealed a screenshot and two gifs on her amino account.
  • The ending of the episode has a hidden text "You think your spears are stronger?" which is written in a darkened version of Bête Noire's text, located on the top.
  • Veir, the co-writer, is called the "Goat Sheppard," hinting that he might have something to do with the Dreemurr family.
    • Or instead, it might just be a nickname given to him by Camila.
  • It can be seen that Bête shows affection towards Akumu.
    • Bête uses Akumu as her shield, sword, energy booster, and her protector against human and monster weapons.
    • Bête is able to feel fear herself, as seen when battling against W. D. Gaster's Gaster Blaster. This makes sense since she technically has a fear SOUL.
  • Gaster says "I hate it when you're right" to Papyrus in Wing Dings.
  • Bête and Akumu use SOULs to restore their full power.
  • The episode was taken down because of a false copyright issue and was restored two weeks after.
  • Undyne is tricked into killing Alphys because her SOUL was very weak in the magic department, therefore it would have barely/failed to boost Bête's powers.[1]
  • Do Or Die was uploaded on the one-year anniversary of Megalomaniac, the first episode of Glitchtale.
  • The title comes from a lyrical cover of "Battle Against A True Hero" by Chi-chi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-Lha10ADKc
  • Gaster knows that only Determination could defeat Fear, but the revenge blinds him from common sense making him not care about the fact that he cannot win and he only wanted to exterminate Bête. Despite this, he could have won.
  • Before its release, this episode's name was revealed and Bête's special attack was announced in an animo post.
  • Although Veir is credited as a co-writer, Camila Cuevas confirmed he was only a story consultant and that he had coerced her to credit him as one.[2]
