The Bête Noire Spell is a forbidden and dangerous spell that revolves around the use of Runic Magic to construct a Bête Noire, an entity of pure destruction.
History[]
This section needs a rewrite |
A wizard long ago (during time of the Prequel) inverted their trait and cast the spell, making the first ever Bête Noire. The Bête Noire was later killed, and the Bête Noire spell became one of the most strictly forbidden spells known to date.
Later on, a wizard named Agate Lightvale created the next Bête Noire by inverting her trait to Fear to kill her brother, Copper, initially killing her sister, Amber, as a way to make him lose his Determination in their battle. Once her soul started to slowly crack, she used Amber's body for the spell. This Bête Noire stayed dormant for a thousand years, before initiating her plan to kill all monsters and rule over humans. This Bête Noire was then later killed by Gaster and her body was taken over by HATE she had consumed.
Capabilities[]

Agate Lightvale using the spell on Amber's body, creating the most recent Bête Noire.
To create a Bête Noire, one must invert their trait and use a corpse as the vessel. The exact method of casting the spell is unknown, but during the process, the caster's soul turns pink, and pink magic appears in their hands. The caster's soul then converts the chosen vessel into magic and absorbs it, forming the physical body of the Bête Noire and reanimating the corpse. The caster’s consciousness is retained and reincarnated inside or extended towards the Bête Noire, and with the caster’s powers from their trait.
Note: Most of this is speculation based on what is seen in Glitchtale Origins: The Black Beast and with the Season 2 Bête Noire, as the mentioned information can potentially differ or change later on.
- Corpse "Possession": As mentioned, the vessel's corpse is used as a physical form for the Bête Noire.
- Corpse Transformation: Additionally, the spell magically transforms the vessel’s corpse for the Bête Noire’s body; In the case with Agate’s Bête Noire and Amber’s corpse specifically, there are altered features of the said corpse of Amber, such as giving her an inverted/pink color scheme, while also being more physically enhanced and presumably nigh-immortal. Additionally, the Bête Noire is filled with pink, magical matter inside their body (which appears to be monstrous, such as with sharp teeth and their eyes being different shades of pink with slit pupils) under the external shell.
- Soul Fission & Fusion (Extended): Bête Noires can split their souls/bodies in half, which can create a separate, sentient entity (an "Akumu") they can control for assistance in harvesting souls and protection against enemies. This process removes the internal, pink, magical matter inside the Bête Noire (the pink matter is seemingly associated with the Bête Noire’s shapeshifting power, which the Akumu also gains this power on its own but more enhanced), causing the Bête Noire to appear more identical to the original vessel. Being now split in half, the Bête Noire’s body is completely empty internally.

- Inherited/Reincarnated Abilities: An example is with the second Bête Noire, who had the consciousness of Agate and technically being an extension of her due to that, who was a powerful wizard even before inverting her trait, and participated in the War of Humans and Monsters.
- Inverted Magic: Bête Noires are able to use inverted magic in a way due to having an inverted trait that’s mixed with the Bête Noire Spell. Depending on what inverted trait is used for the spell, they can use that magic in their own way. This is shown with the second Bête Noire via hallucinations, pyrokinesis, explosive generation, memory viewing, and Rhabdophobia.

Trivia[]
- A Bête Noire’s weakness lies in either being extremely low on or completely run out of magic/souls to consume or being struck by a powerful attack that prevents them from regenerating completely.
- Despite their immense power, Bête Noires are far from invincible, and their strength is entirely dependent on the soul used, amount of magic consumed, and the vessel used.
- It’s suggested that a Bête Noire is deeply connected to their creator, as they share the same SOUL. This bond likely extends to their intentions, memories, and possibly consciousness. It’s somewhat debatable of the relationship with the Bête Noire and the creator;
- One theory can be the Bête Noire being a mental reincarnation of the creator's consciousness in another physical body, essentially an avatar for the creator to prolong their life.
- Alternatively, the Bête Noire, while retaining the creator's memories and wishes before their death, is (to a certain degree) a distinct individual (at least physically) and acts as an "extension" or "fragment" of the creator mentally, essentially being a servant who solely exists to fulfill their creator’s wishes.
- If a Bête Noire were to be made with an inverted Dual-Traited Soul, it would be terrifying.[1]
- A Bête Noire can be created with any trait, but the soul of the Bête Noire in question will always be pink because the spell changes it to that color. The pink soul will still have the trait used.[2]
- While it can be assumed a Bête Noire can be made for good purposes, due to being constructed to fulfill the wishes of their creators, it is very unlikely considering one must invert their trait (coming in contact with HATE) before casting the spell, causing them to be more violent. Though, Bête Noire’s may be made to be evil considering their name meaning is "a person or thing that one particularly dislikes."
- According to a speed paint video, it possibly implies that a Bête Noire is given instructions on when to emerge from their dormancy and act out whatever is desired prior to reincarnation.[3] In the case of the second Bête Noire, it took a thousand years for monsters to be released from the Underground.
- When another spotlight shined on her before killing Muffet in Game Over: Part 2, Bête’s shell strips away from her body, and after blasting Mettaton with a projectile, she has pink matter underneath her external shell. While she was pointing her energy projectile at Mettaton before firing it, her hair suddenly became longer and her eye flashed orange (which is likely a small reference to Agate), additionally with other times before and after this where she was attacked and caused her shell to break off, showing the same pink skin and sharp teeth. This could give the implication while this is a Bête Noire’s true form when they’re fused, their real appearance may be what they look like without the vessel’s body as an outer shell covering the pink matter underneath.
- Interestingly, when Amber’s body magically transforms, only Amber’s blue hair turns pink, while her brown hair stays the same.
