A Kumuling using the harpoon

Akumu using its harpoon
This Harpoon, often referred to as the Spear, is Bête Noire's best-known magical weapon. It is light pink and shaped like a javelin. The weapon is thrown at a target with a string attached to the end, and it is capable of extracting a victim's SOUL without shattering it. Although its primary purpose is to harvest SOULs, it can also be used for attack and defense. The weapon is also shown to be used by Akumu and the Kumulings (for whom it appears as a light pink tentacle extending from their mouths), which may imply the weapon comes from entities associated with the Bête Noire Spell.
Abilities[]
General[]
- Soul Piercing: The harpoon can pierce through one's SOUL without the SOUL breaking and can take it out of the victim. Alternatively, the harpoon can even break the victim’s SOUL entirely, shown with the Kumulings in Game Over Part 2.
Bête Noire[]
- Rope/String Attachment: As mentioned, when a SOUL is pierced, a light pink string appears on the end to retrieve the SOUL back and hold it in place in Bête’s palm. It’s shown Bête can not only do this with her own harpoon, but she can do the same with her creations; an example being when Akumu pierced Asriel’s SOUL and Bête held Akumu’s harpoon in her palm.
- Fusion Inducement: In My Promise, Bête used the harpoon to fuse with Akumu to access her true form.
- Magic Amplifcation: Shown with Bête in Do or Die, she can generate magical energy through the harpoon.
Trivia[]
- The harpoon is the representation of Bête’s SOUL.
- The summoning animation for the harpoon seems to change. In its debut in Dust, Bête summons her pink SOUL with a line of magic rotating around the SOUL while moving upwards, and then it drops down on top of the SOUL, turning the SOUL into the harpoon. In episodes after this, Bête summons her harpoon as any other weapon in the series, being more quick and simple as it forms from energy into a physical object.
- It’s unclear why Bête stops using her harpoon after Love: Part 2 and evolving into her true appearance. It’s possible she either does not have access to it somehow or she simply decides to be more direct with her victims by killing them upfront and taking their SOULs, likely the latter.
- The color of Bête’s harpoon seems to change in different scenes. While it’s typically light pink, it’s shown to be hot pink in other scenes, such as when battling Frisk.
